Health Fair 2014: Liver Diseases: Prevention and Treatment (Flyer and Poster)

The Health Fair is a major annual public health event organized by CCMSBC, SUCCESS and other organizations.

This year’s theme: Liver Diseases: Prevention and  Treatment

Even with light showers, our “CCMSBC TEAM” members all finished the 7 km walk with great team spirit. The team has raised $600 and the event exceeded its goal and raised $450,000. More photos coming. And a news report here.

The 29th annual S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Walk with the Dragon, one of Vancouver’s most festive community-based charitable events, is returning to scenic Lumbermen’s Arch, Stanley Park on Sunday, July 20, 2014. Annually more than 13,000 participants, including over 300 teams, show their support by following the colorful S.U.C.C.E.S.S. dragon on a scenic 7-km panoramic walk along the famous Stanley Park seawall to raise funds for S.U.C.C.E.S.S., one of the largest social service providers in British Columbia.

CCMSBC will join this event as a team, CCMSBC (加華醫學會). We also organize this as an event of our Mentorship Program.  Come to join the team, exercise and raise funds for a good cause.

Dear Dr. Yu:

I manage a research project based out of the eHealth Strategy Office with UBC’s Faculty of Medicine (the same office as the iCON project) which is exploring the feasibility of using mobile technology to support individuals with Type-2 diabetes (mDAWN). The study is 3-months in length and focuses on the use if three different technologies:

1.       SMS (text messaging) – participants are sent texts twice a week with short health tips, links to health resources, and health questions/challenges

2.       An electronic community of practice (eCOP) – participants are provided with a log-in to a website with health resources and a semi-facilitated discussion board where they can interact with others in the study

3.        Wireless monitoring devices – participants are provided with a wireless weight scale and blood pressure monitor which upload readings to a website so participants can track their measurements over time, as well as a standard blood glucose meter and pedometer, and asked to track their own health measurements

As this is a feasibility study our main research goal is to determine how these technologies fit into people’s lives, what barriers to adoption might exist, and whether or not general improvements in the health of participants can be seen. We are currently mid-way  through our second English-language study group and are hoping to launch a Chinese-language study group in early/mid-July.

I wanted to see if you might be able to help us recruit for this study. We do have a recruitment poster (attached in traditional Chinese) and I would be happy to send hard copies of the posters if you are able to put it up in your office or if you have other ideas for how it might be shared.

Survey on Computerized Cognitive Test Batteries: The Physicians’ Perspective
 
The problem:
There is a need for innovation in cognitive testing approaches to the assessment of memory and cognitive concerns. Screening tests lack sensitivity. Neuropsychological testing is largely unavailable. Self-administered Computerized Cognitive Test Batteries (CCTB) that reliably detect cognitive impairment, could provide the needed innovation.
 
A new CCTB:
UBC researchers from cognitive science, computer science, neuropsychology, geriatrics, and behavioural neurology have developed Cognitive Testing on Computer (C-TOC). C-TOC
has 12 tasks, covers all cognitive domains, and takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. It can be done in a clinic office, and has the potential to be done online in a home setting. C-TOC has been developed with input from patients referred for cognitive evaluation (end-users), and from a cultural advisory panel.
 
Your perspective on CCTBs:
In this survey we ask you questions about your perspective on CCTBs, their feasibility, and their utility. We would like you to imagine a CCTB like C-TOC:  an easy-to-use tool that has validity in detecting MCI and dementia, and that can help in the clinical diagnosis of these conditions, potentially even in the identification of the underlying etiology.

We had an overwhelming response to our Chinese New Year Dinner invitation. About 150 members and their guests enjoyed the festive celebration – to celebrate the arrival of the year of horse.
